John Zimny

Brass Caption Head/ Arranger/Program & Staff Coordinator

John began his life long career in music as a member of the McHenry Viscounts Drum and Bugle Corps and later played lead soprano with the Chicago Royal-Airs during the '67 and '68 seasons. While a member of the United States Air Force Force Academy Drum and Bugle Corps he began arranging and composing which led to writing for numerous musical groups throughout the US, Canada and Europe. After his discharge from the Air Force, John earned his Bachelor Degree of Arts from Northern Illinois University and moved to California where he began teaching in the Folsom - Cordova School District. At this time he also became the brass caption head and arranger for the Freelancers Drum and Bugle Corps. Having also written music for theater and film, John had the opportunity to work with Grammy winner, Nelson Riddle. As a Sacramento resident for the past 30 years, he has conducted classes in concert band, jazz band, brass ensemble, jazz improvisation, recording techniques, music history, and electronic composition at Sacramento City College while also nearing completion of his Masters Degree in Education.

Currently, John is a music teacher at Folsom Middle School and has arranged for the high school marching band and jazz choir.His middle school jazz band has won every major jazz festival in northern California, as well as the Reno Jazz Festival. The band also received national recognition from DownBeat Magazine by winning the Prestigious " Best Junior High Jazz Ensemble " three out of the last four years. Also, the Amercian Music Conference in conjunction with the VH1 Save the Music Foundation voted the Folsom Jazz and Music program one of the "Top 100 National Music Programs". Finally, John and his band have recently been endorsed by the Weril Instrument Company in conjuction with Dynasty and DEG Music Products, Inc.

2005 marks John's fourth year with the Chicago Royal-Airs serving as the brass caption head and arranger/program coordinator. He also continues to be the brass arranger for the Air Force Academy Drum and Bugle Corps and staff coordinator for the Sacramento River City Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. As a member of the Central States Judges Association, John has judged many jazz, concert and marching band festivals throughout the country.
